| Gimme Shelter - altered book spread |
Since the infamous power surge that got my computer last month also took out my stereo...which is in my playroom...and we haven't taken to be repaired yet...I'm feeling very fortunate to have my record player.
Isn't it adorable?!? I had one very similar to it - which I bought with my own allowance - when I was around 10 years old. It was my first major purchase.

In addition to my allowance (there were six of us kids so it wasn't a lot) (but I'm more thankful than I can say for what I did receive) I also sold greeting cards door to door in those days and believe me...every penny was hard earned.

I named this spread because of the bug (opposite side) trying to get away...which is obvious and then when I looked at this picture on the computer...I saw something not so obvious...nor intended. It looks to me like there is a fairy - & maybe another little one above it - crouching under the wings. |
When I saw this record player at a yard sale in 2k9, I at first thought it was a beautiful box. When I got closer and saw what it was, I got that tingly, hair raising excited feeling and I knew I had to have it. This little gem cost me a total of $3 (I didn't even try to talk the price down) and I've played it off and on ever since.
I was teaching workshops in those days and took it with me to play old records while we arted. I loved it! I even took it all the way to Houston when I taught my bohemiannie! bag workshop at International Quilt Festival. (insert smile) (big). (I have to throw that in every now and then). (The fact that I taught there).

| I AM - I doodled in my art journal quite a lot while the computer was down and Sophia was UP! :) She doesn't mind if I art while she's watching cartoons - as long as I'm in the same room...paying attention. |

So...during this past month I've been playing my OLD records and last night when I was sewing, I listened to my Grand Funk Railroad album - Closer To Home. And of course it got me excited about my upcoming trip to the States which I'm sure you'll be hearing more about.

And which is one of the reasons why I haven't been on the computer very much this week. I'm busy getting ready for our quickly approaching trip to Florida and Texas.

I'm so happy to see more of you, ANNI--I missed you so much!! I was getting excited when you mention Grand Funk AND coming to the states in teh same post because...did you know that Grand Funk got their name from The Grand Funk Railroad, which originated in the Flint, Michigan area...is actually printed on an overpass near where I lived for many years (I was born and raised in Ann Arbor--home of U of M!! and live her now--also work at U of M!! but lived in Flint and surrounding areas for 20 years)...I was quickly thinking...IF ANNI is coming to Michigan I will travel miles to meet her in person!!!! But, alas, Florida and Texas? No can do...sadly...maybe next time?

You have given me much to think about and consider...I truly appreciate your input and I'll keep you posted on my progress.

DeleteI think your record player was an absolute gem of a buy, it's what they call Retro or Kitsch or something, but Cool is what I'd call it. Ideas for your Round Robin, I reckon Sprinkle Dust, you know the sort that is all shiny and sparkly and lovely and goes everywhere it shouldn't (lol)...how's that for an idea - ybf ann:)

I'm imagining little Annie bouncing up and down with her new record player lol your story of (non) materialistic childhood reminds me of mine, I wasn't one of six, one of one actually but my mother made sure I wasn't spoilt because of it. Everything I had I earned & appreciated. I certainly wasn't hard done by but I never got anything just because I wanted it. If I'd have tried to throw a tantrum to get something like I see so many kids do in stores my oh my! I wouldn't have a new thing for a year lol not that I ever tried it, not with my mother. Looking back I was very spoilt with love though and that's all that's needed. Thanks for your story, made me feel all warm and fuzzy remembering my own.

Bluesy Jeff Beck is on at the moment as I work on my Jennibellie "Card Journal". :) I think your Mom sounds like a wonderful person and I'll be we'd be good friends. I have to confess to spoiling Sophia a bit...but more with time and letting her have her way than with things. I choose my battles carefully. Love IS the answer and I send buckets of it to you today.

ReplyDeleteThanks Coleen! I've got Frank Sinatra accompanied by Tommy Dorsey crooning on it right now! One of my mom's old albums. :)Boy does THAT bring back my early childhood! I love being part of Sophia's life. It's the best. She already IS an artist. Her love for the play room equals mine...just not in long doses!
