CARTAGENA

I'm sorting, sorting, sorting.

And sorting.

I've got about 2,000 pictures burned onto discs -

from my old-now-wiped-and-given-away desktop -

and want to leave as many discs behind as possible...

so one of my projects has been to load them onto my laptop

and then go through and delete all but my favorites.

These pictures were taken the first time we visited Colombia...

before moving here a little over three years ago.

They're of old town Cartagena...

which in it's own way...

is very beautiful.

Remember the movie, "Romancing the Stone"?

It was filmed partially in Cartagena.

Michael Douglas dove off the wall surrounding the old city

to wrestle the crocodile that swallowed the huge emerald.

Of course...

if he dove off the real wall...

he would've hit concrete.

Still.

It IS a beautiful city

and I would encourage you to visit.

Just don't wear any nice jewelry

or carry much money

or important documents

with you.

And the Hotel 3 Banderas,

where we stayed...

EXCELLENT.

BUT when you venture out...

DON'T look the street vendors in the eye

unless you want them to follow you for the next hour

begging you to buy their wares.

Create Your Life,

annie!

  1. Love the doorways and windows. There's lots of inspiration here for future artworks, great colourful photos, beautiful but slightly scary.

    1. It was very disconcerting. I don't like being rude...but felt like I had to be to shake them off!

    1. I don't sit still very well...so watching any movie is difficult for me...but I've seen that one from beginning to end at least twice and number it among my favorites!

  5. Wonderful pictures. (And you don't have to be out of the USA for that to happen! I once had a panhandler follow me in NYC haranguing me for money until I got fed up and yelled back at him! Picture and VERY {eight months } pregnant lady screaming back at a poor disheveled panhandler! LOL)

    1. LOL! I can see it now. That's how I felt when I put on my meanest look, and stared them in the eye and very firmly said, "NO"!

  8. Beautiful images! Will you be a bit homesick for this place when you go back to the States? I always find that right before I leave a place I can only see its beauty and completely forget why I wanted to leave at all. ;-) Good luck on all the moving stuff.

    1. Thanks Caatje! No, I won't be homesick at all. Only for Sophia and Claire. Since we've decided to move, I've had a difficult time finding the beauty here, so these pictures helped me a lot. Cartagena is about an hour away and when you get outside the walls it's a different picture...as is Barranquilla, where we live. I've refrained from showing the negative space in this city because the people here are quite lovely...inside and out.

  10. I would miss a city like this so much. I love cities that have a rich street life. That is what America is lacking in spite of everything else that's good about it.
Hope you are settling in. I'm sure your husband is happy.

    1. How true that is...for much of the country. Downtown St Pete...4 miles north of me...is - as you have beautifully said, "Rich in street life"! Even over by the beaches, the tourists are out walking and the locals are giving them something beautiful to walk to. I love that about this area too. We used to have to go to the mall way back in the day to get anywhere near that atmosphere. :)

We are both so happy! I'm alone doing exactly what I want today while Jerry went to the old car swap meet that he used to do when we lived here. Yeeee hawwwww!

  12. We are leaving on a cruise to ABC's, Cartagena & Panama in Feb 2015. We were wondering if anyone knows if there are yard goods stores down there. We like to buy local fabric where ever we travel, it adds an interesting flavour to our quilts and hangings
